Staff who will be doing any bibliographic cataloging need to have Bibliographic Cataloging permissions. In order to be granted Bibliographic Cataloging permissions, catalogers must pass both the Item Cataloging Assessment and the Bibliographic Cataloging Assessment. The assessment includes Multiple Choice questions about NC Cardinal policies and cataloging standards, Fill in the Blank Fields in MARC records, and Evaluating Records.
Before you can begin work as a cataloger, you will need to pass both Item and Bibliographic Cataloging Assessments. You can find these assessments in the NC Cardinal Niche Academy.
Both assessments ask staff to create an account in Niche Academy by entering their name and library email address in order to go on to the questions sections. An individually assigned login access account is required for all staff using cataloging or administrative permissions. Staff in migrating libraries will not need this account set up prior to taking the assessments, but staff at established libraries MUST have an individual staff login account set up in Evergreen prior to taking the assessments.
Bibliographic Catalogers manage shared bibliographic records. After passing the Bib Cataloging Assessment, they can:
The Bibliographic Cataloging Assessment is meant to check your knowledge of NC Cardinal cataloging standards and best practices. Many of these standards are specific to NC Cardinal policy, and do not necessarily reflect current international standards for Cataloging as outlined in RDA!
To pass, you will need to achieve a minimum score of 95% in each individual section.
Cataloging assessments are open book, so staff may use this knowledge book, other websites, or notes (but not answer sheets) to help answer questions. The purpose is not to require that staff know everything, only to show that they know where to find the information. These are individual assessments, so staff should not be collaborating on the answers with colleagues for the assessments. Cataloging assessments can be repeated as many times as needed until a passing score is achieved.
After passing, you can expect to have your permissions updated within a week. If you need permissions updated sooner, or it has been a week and your permissions have not changed, please submit a help ticket.
Note: You must already have a staff login account in order to be granted Item Cataloger permissions. If you do not yet have a staff login account, please reach out to your library's System Login Access Manager (SLAM) and request this account before you take the assessment.
