2.2. Checking Out Open Circulations

Last Updated 07/01/2026

Open Circulation Already Exists

On This Page

If patrons find items on the shelf that weren't properly checked in, staff can process the checkout and check the item in from the riginal transaction at the same time from the patron's checkout screen,

If a patron brings an item to the desk to check out that is already checked out by a different patron, the circulation will initially fail with the following error message:
"There is an open circulation on the requested item. This item was checked out by another patron on MM/DD/YYYY."

Proceeding with Checkout

In most cases, you should proceed to check the item out to the patron. This situation typically arises when the item was found on the shelf after not being checked in properly by staff when the previous patron returned it.

  1. Check the Forgive fines? box to avoid charging the previous patrons overdue fines.
  2. Click the "Normal Checkin then Checkout" button.

The item will appear in the patron's checkout grid, with a normal due date. The item will have been checked in automatically by this process, and will no longer appear on the previous patron's account.

Checking Out a Claims Returned Item

If an item was mistakenly reshelved without being checkd in, and the patron subsequently had the item marked Claims Returned, the error message will state:

"Requested circulation is marked claims returned."

Proceeding with Checkout of a Claims Returned Item

In most cases, you should proceed to check the item out to the patron. Fines will be forgiven or applied based on settings related to the Claims Returned process, so there is no "Forgive FInes" box. SImply click the "Force Action" button.

The item will appear in the patron's checkout grid, with a normal due date. The item will have been checked in automatically by this process, and will no longer appear on the previous patron's account.
